#4 Kevin Johnson’s health and development
Kevin Johnson was a star last year for the Texans when he was on the field. It was his first year, but he proved he could be out there playing with the big boys on the field. Kevin went down to a foot injury last year which kept him out of the last half of the season, into the playoffs. With the loss of AJ Bouye, Kevin will need to step up and prove he can be a shutdown corner in this league like he was in college.
#3 Duane Brown’s contract holdout
Yesterday, Ian Rappaport reported that Duane Brown would be holding out due to his contract dispute. Duane is under contract for another 2 years, and GM Rick Smith made sure to make it noted when he was talking to the press this week about it. He stated that there is no “Dispute” for his contract as he is still under contract for the next two years. Duane Brown is one of the Texan’s best lineman, and also one of the team’s most important players. I don’t see him holding out for much longer, but due to his age and previous injuries, I can see why he wants to get paid.
#2 Who in the world is starting at QB this year?
The main offseason battle is between QB Tom Savage and Deshaun Watson as they battle to take the starting position under center. Tom Savage has been groomed into the system for a couple of years now, and probably has the best experience and knowledge of the system to run it perfectly. Deshaun is still a rookie and new to the system, to where I would not be surprised if he wasn’t running under center this year at all, unless a disaster happens.
#1 Deshaun Watson.
Did you really think anything else would be #1? C’mon. The Texans made a bold move and traded up for a guy they even label as their “Franchise QB of the future”. I mean c’mon, how is this guy not the headline for camp? The #1 thing to look for with Deshaun is his accuracy and power. He struggled with deep balls in college, and he has 2 deep threats on the Texans named DeAndre Hopkins, and Will Fuller. His development will be huge for the Texans this year as they will rely on him in the future heavily. If he can prove to be the guy during training camp, why not give him the shot week 1? He is the easily going to be the most watched player at camp besides JJ Watt.
