Bill O'Brien and Watson are a pair that should stay together

Posted by Devon Bennett on

Bill O’Brien will be in the last year of his contract that he signed in 2014 to the end of the 2018-19 season. His 4th year as the Houston Texans head coach hasn’t been the greatest year for him. Despite losing 11 games so far, and losing most of his playmakers on offense and defense, he has managed to show some bright spots throughout the year with Watson and his fast-paced offense around him.

Watson is a star so far, and it’s not all him making himself look like that out. I don’t know if a lot remember, but O’Brien Weeks 2-8 were “Prime O’Brien” and this was something I haven’t seen with him here as a Houston head coach. O’Brien had a huge favorable lineup and schemes for Watson which allowed him to thrive like his college days- but maintaining a serious NFL offense as well. Watson had different lineups in the back with 2 WR’s and 1 RB standing next to him in the shotgun- something I haven’t seen in an NFL lineup before. It opened up the offense, and allowed teams to bite HARD on the play action, for a deep pass by Watson to Fuller or Hopkins, or allowed a hard run game with many teams trying to not fall for the bite, but with 2 other run blockers is hard to do when the box on the line is not full. The offense was something out of a college playbook but with the NFL like lineups that allowed it to be successful. As we all know, college ball does not work in the NFL, ask some of the successful college coaches who had a hard time adapting.

O’Brien Is very vocal and has said he wants to stay and coach the Texans – extension or not. The dynamic duo with Watson is worth waiting the year or even extending him before to make sure and keep the head coach who showed promise with the Texans franchise QB. Watson has stuck up for his coach as well, and on many social media platforms said he wants to be with his coach. I don’t know about you, but when your franchise player asks for his coach to stay, I believe you keep him there and let it unfold.
