BREAKING: The Houston Astros have acquired Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates, greatly strengthening the defending World Series Champions. According to MLB Fox reporter Ken Rosenthal, the Astros acquired Cole in a trade for Joe Musgrove and Colin Moran. Many would agree the trade is a steal for the Astros, as they did not give up any of their top prospects (Whitley, Tucker or Martes) to get Gerrit on their roster.
The Astros didn’t completely dominate the trade, as the Pirates did, in fact, get some quality players. Musgrove came up huge in the final innings of the World Series, and Houston may not have a championship if it was not for him. Moran, also a good player, but Bregman is obviously the better player to have. The Astros almost walked away with robbery, but this trade is still heavily favored on their side. As they say, the rich get richer and the Astros seemed to have gained an enormous amount of wealth at the Pirates expense.
The thing the Astros needed to improve on the most was pitching in the offseason, and this will definitely help them improve in that regard. With Yu Darvish leaning on the fence, he may also join the Astros in an attempt to get a ring in 2018, providing the Astros with an incredible pitching rotation alongside MVP Justin Verlander.
The Astros are currently looking to be the first team to become repeat World Series Champions in almost 2 decades. No other team has been close to this feat, and Luhnow has expressed his feelings about creating the ultimate roster for a “win-now” mode team. With Luhnow also keeping talent but becoming a powerhouse, the Astros will have some youth and veteran talent with them to help push the limit and reach the World Series again. Jim Crane hinted at the trade to acquire Gerrit Cole a couple of days ago, causing most Astros fans to lose hope when the original trade fell through.
The Astros bolstered their pitching rotation and could possibly attract more players in the coming weeks. Not many moves have been made in Free Agency so far, but the Astros are making big moves in the offseason which will surely make them a favorite landing place for many other players.
