Houston ISD has just recently announced that students will be eating free the whole year, as they believe most families will be recovering well into the school year. This decision was recently announced this morning.
HISD recently got the approval process completed through the USDA and TDA to waive the application process for most family sin order to sign up for the free lunch plan. Approximately 200k students will now be allowed to eat for free this school year, and parents won’t have to worry about lunch being the expense that brought many families living on a budget. This new plan covers Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well, so kids will not go home hungry as they have been fed from the school every day that school is in session. This is a great step for the district as it will allow many students and families to not worry about other food costs and can get direct funds to start rebuilding their homes, and getting the essentials they need.
Houston ISD has closed school until next week so far, but more updates are expected to come. Hurricane Harvey is expected to be one of the worst national disasters as far as rebuilding efforts are considered. It would be one of the costliest natural disaster fixes in history.
