Earlier last week, the New York Knicks remain committed to deal Carmelo Anthony to the Houston Rockets. Per Frank Isola from NY Daily News, “Knicks president Steve Mills informed representatives last week that the team wanted to wait until after introducing Scott Perry as general manager before addressing Anthony’s future” (Frank Isdola NY Daily News). If this report is true, this mean the Knicks are on the verge of complying with the superstars wants and sending him to the Houston Rockets for a deal involving Ryan Anderson.
The only hold up to the whole deal from being completed? Ryan Anderson. No team wants to take his contract without another salary dump. Portland has expressed interest, but would have to dump their own Meyers Leonard, which the Knicks are hesitant to accept. The Knicks seem to be playing hardball with the Rockets, as they are still negotiating the framework of the deal.
Earlier reports stated that the Knicks organization would have a meeting with Carmelo Anthony to determine if they could persuade him to stay with the rebuilding franchise. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the meetings did not go well, and Carmelo has expressed that he does NOT want to come back to the team and develop their young core. For a star like Carmelo, who is 33 years old, wants to focus on winning, not rebuilding. The Rockets are the likeliest destination for him to land as he has expressed interest in waiving his no trade clause to join the team.
Carmelo currently has a trade kicker which would also net him about an extra $12 million dollars, which he is willing to waive if traded to the Rockets. The ball is in the Knicks court, and the Rockets are doing everything they can to play ball. Ever since the Rockets acquired Chris Paul via trade, they have been aggressive in filling out a star-studded roster full of defensive talent, and pure scorers. The team, if it were to land Melo, would become a serious threat to Golden State Warriors.
How do you feel about Carmelo joining the Rockets? Would it help them move the needle to become a true title contender? Or will they not have the chemistry to work together due to Melo being a ball dominant forward? There is only one way to find out, and that is if the Knicks end up sending Carmelo to his requested destination.
