The Texans blew it. They made Houston believe they were going to come out strong and fight with every ounce of energy they could use. Well, we were lied too. Never in my 10 years of viewing the Texans, have I seen such a pathetic performance from players and coaching as I did today.
The Defense was not the main issue, but had its struggles. Kevin Johnson was getting torched early which helped Bortles find a quick groove to keep moving the chains for the first few drives. The tackling wasn’t there, Watt and Clowney were nonexistent. They had 1 tackle each. 1 tackle. 1 TACKLE. For two amazing, defensive ends, that is horrible and inexcusable. The Texans had no pass rush, and were gassed from the constant playing since the offense didn’t do their job. I will get onto the offense in just a second, but the defense should not be left off the hook so early.
Don’t get me started on the most pathetic outing from an offensive line I have ever seen in the history of the NFL. I mean the Texans had a better line in 2002. Carr had some PTSD flashbacks watching this game today I’m sure. There was no motor in the offensive line to protect their QB. Savage or Watson both were pressured all day, with Watson being able to scramble and get out of the way. Savage looked like a statue in the pocket today not noticing anything coming at him. Watson is most likely the starter going forward and I’m okay with that. I was all in for Savage but today proved me wrong. The Texans need to have their offensive line looked at. Not to mention the Texans lost all 3 of their TE’s to concussions, and lost Ellington to one as well. The Texans have 0 depth in those spots as of now. That is a problem that needs to be addressed this week, and Duane better be ready to come back. If Rick Smith doesn’t call, begging for him to come back by the end of tonight I will be shocked.
Special teams did their part today and for the first time in forever I can finally say, the Special teams did GREAT this week. I have a feeling I won’t say that much longer, but special teams kept the game alive for once and didn’t give up anything big. That was a huge gain from this game if there was anything to look for.
Texans play the Bengals this Thursday. It’ll be a quick week, but they will need to bounce back faster than ever.
On a bright note, I’m glad Watson got a chance to play. He showed promise, but also showed his weakness which is pressure passing. He had 2 errant throws which were picked off, but one was called back. He was saved. He should be the starter come week 2, but once he is, I don’t see BOB brining Savage back unless Watson goes down.
